====== Windows Staff Server (Grindelwald) ======

===== Overview =====

SoCS hosts a Windows server for staff to facilitate the use of any applications that require the Windows platform. It consists of the Microsoft 365 suite of apps, Genetec for door security and access, and SF Queue for course evaluations. The Windows server is not connected to MECM but is AD bound to restrict access to people in the socs staff group. Access is granted to Faculty members by request and not as default. The server blocks outbound RDP connections due to security reasons.  

===== Workflow =====

The SoCS Windows server for faculty can be accessed at grindelwald.socs.uoguelph.ca. The recommended workflow is to install the "Remote Desktop" application for Mac, signing in with the Apple ID used at work, and connecting to the Windows server with University Single Sign On credentials. 

===== Genetec ===== 

Genetec is used to manage door access and security. Currently, only Kyle has access to this software and is the only IT admin who handles access requests at SoCS. Requests for access to SoCS spaces are handled on a case by case basis. Students requesting access typically require a faculty or staff member to vouch for them, whereas faculty members themselves and students they request access for are typically given access immediately. In some cases, director approval is necessary to grant access. 

Genetec contains information about every staff, student, and faculty member in the University of Guelph. IT Admins are able to search for users and assign them to groups that facilitate access. Access to different University Spaces can be configured through groups to follow schedules that specify the number of days and number of hours per day. 

==== Licensing =====
Windows Server licenses are purchased and managed through CCS. These are per core licenses to run and update the operating system. There are also approximately 200 per device CALS (client access licenses) to allow users to access the SoCS Windows servers through RDP. These licenses are installed in the RDP licensing manager on Grindelwald and are available as a pool for any of the SoCS Windows servers.
