Master of Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence (MCTI) Student Handbook

Duration of the Program

Full-time The full-time MCTI program is normally completed within one­-year (3 semesters, or 12 months). Students enrolled in the full-time program can take up to a maximum of 2.5 credits per semester.

Part-time The part-time MCTI program is normally completed between 6-9 semesters (24-36 months). Students enrolled in the part-time program can take up to a maximum of 1.0 credits per semester.


Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Work Assignments

MCTI graduate students are not guaranteed GTA assignments in their initial offer of admission. However, while MCTI students are not guaranteed GTAs, all full-time, registered graduate students are eligible to apply for these positions.

GTAs within the School of Computer Science are normally only offered in the fall and winter semesters. If you are interested in applying for a GTA position you must apply online each semester via GTA Work Assignments website.


Course Requirement

Students in the Master of Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence (MCTI) program are required to complete a minimum of 4.00 graduate credits, including CIS*6590 Professional Seminar in Cybersecurity. The remaining 3.50 credits must be completed from the following list of courses:

  • CIS*6510 [0.50] Cybersecurity and Defense in Depth
  • CIS*6520 [0.50] Advanced Digital Forensics and Incident Response
  • CIS*6530 [0.50] Cyber Threat Intelligence and Adversarial Risk Analysis
  • CIS*6540 [0.50] Advanced Penetration Testing and Exploit Development
  • CIS*6550 [0.50] Privacy, Compliance, and Human Aspects of Cybersecurity
  • CIS*6570 [0.50] Advanced Cryptography and Cryptanalysis
  • CIS*6580 [0.50] Security Monitoring and Cyber Threat Hunting
  • CIS*6670 [0.50] Special Topics in Cybersecurity

Fall 2022, Winter 2023 & Summer 2023 Course Schedules

Fall 2022

If you are a FULL-TIME MCTI student, you will need to select UNIV*7510*01 (02, 03 or 04) for active, fulltime registration AND register for FOUR courses in total for Fall 2022 semester, including:

  • CIS*6530 Cyber Threat Intelligence & Adversarial Risk Analysis [0.5]
  • CIS*6590 Professional Seminar in Cybersecurity [0.25]
  • CIS*6510 Cybersecurity and Defense in Depth [0.5]
  • CIS*6550 Privacy, Compliance, and Human Aspects of Cybersecurity [0.5]

If you are a PART-TIME MCTI student, you will need to select UNIV*7520*01 for active part-time registration AND register for 1-2 of the following courses* for Fall 2022 semester:

  • CIS*6510 Cybersecurity and Defense in Depth [0.5]
  • CIS*6550 Privacy, Compliance, and Human Aspects of Cybersecurity [0.5]
  • CIS*6590 Professional Seminar in Cybersecurity [0.25]

Winter 2023

If you are a FULL-TIME MCTI student, you will need to select UNIV*7510*01 (02, 03 or 04) for active, fulltime registration AND register for THREE courses in total for Winter 2023 semester, including:

  • CIS*6520 [0.50] Advanced Digital Forensics and Incident Response [0.5]
  • CIS*6540 [0.50] Advanced Penetration Testing and Exploit Development [0.5]
  • CIS*6590 [0.25] Professional Seminar in Cybersecurity [0.25]

If you are a PART-TIME MCTI student, you will need to select UNIV*7520*01 for active part-time registration AND register for 1-2 of the following courses* for Winter 2023 semester:

  • CIS*6520 [0.50] Advanced Digital Forensics and Incident Response [0.5]
  • CIS*6540 [0.50] Advanced Penetration Testing and Exploit Development [0.5]
  • CIS*6590 [0.25] Professional Seminar in Cybersecurity [0.5]

Summer 2023

If you are a FULL-TIME MCTI student, you will need to select UNIV*7510*01 (02, 03 or 04) for active, fulltime registration AND register for the following courses for Summer 2023 semester, including:

  • CIS*6570 Advanced Cryptography and Cryptanalysis [0.5]
  • CIS*6580 Security Monitoring and Cyber Threat Hunting [0.5]

OR

  • CIS*6560 Cybersecurity Project [1.00]

If you are a PART-TIME MCTI student, you will need to select UNIV*7520*01 for active part-time registration AND register for 1-2 of the following courses* for Fall 2022 semester:

  • CIS*6570 Advanced Cryptography and Cryptanalysis [0.5]
  • CIS*6580 Security Monitoring and Cyber Threat Hunting [0.5]

MCTI Project

Full-time MCTI students have the option of completing a culminating, independent project wherein students produce an evidence-based solution to a complex security problem in partnership with an industry partner or academic expert. The MCTI Project option is offered in Summer 2023 semester [CIS*6650 - 1.00 credits].


MCTI Student Laptops

Full-time and part-time MCTI students will be provided laptops for use during their duration in the program. Upon completion of the MCTI program requirements, laptops must be returned to SoCS by the last day of the completed semester.

Applying to Graduate

Make sure you review the Graduate Calendar for important dates, such as:

  • Last date for application to graduate for Convocation without late fee
  • Last day to submit late application for (Semester) Convocation

Please ensure you apply to graduate online before the deadline.
