Windows Student Server (Lestrange, Voldemort)
Overview
SoCS hosts a Windows server with two nodes for simple load balancing that is accessible for student use in certain classes. At the time of writing, these servers are used primarily for CIS2030 (Microcomputers), CIS3120 (Digital Systems), and CIS4520 (Cryptography). The servers are configured with the following tools::
- Easy68k.
- Logicworks (perpetual license).
- Cryptool.
- Microsoft 365 Suite.
Workflow
Access to the SoCS Student Windows servers is restricted to SoCS faculty members and SoCS undergraduate students. Sometimes, TAs for SoCS classes are given access to these servers if it is necessary for their tasks, but they are not given access by default.
The servers can be accessed as lestrange.socs.uoguelph.ca and voldemort.socs.uoguelph.ca respectively. The recommended workflow to connect to them is using the “Remote Desktop” application for Mac or Windows.
Licensing
The Windows Server OS running on all SoCS Windows servers are licensed through CCS. Additionally, all servers have approximately 200 client address licenses which are also licensed through CCS. Licenses are managed on Grindelwald.
