Installing and Using Nextcloud on Mac

These are the instructions for using NextCloud on Mac. For other platforms, see SoCS Nextcloud Dropbox.

Installing the Application

The NextCloud Application is already installed on the iMacs in Thornbrough 2420. To install NextCloud on your own computer:

1. Download the NextCloud Installer. This can be found at https://nextcloud.com/install/#install-clients. Choose the macOS version.

2. Once the file has downloaded, double click it to open. Follow the prompts, hitting “Continue” on the first page, and “Install” on the second. NextCloud is now ready to use.

You will have to complete this section for each new computer you need to install NextCloud on.

Connecting to NextCloud

The NextCloud desktop application allows you to conveniently view your files through your regular filesystem. A copy of your files is saved to your local machine, and synchronized to the cloud. You will have to follow these steps the first time you use NextCloud on a new computer, but NextCloud will start automatically after that.

1. Start the Nextcloud Program, and click “Log In”.

2. Enter the server address:

https://cloud.socs.uoguelph.ca

3. On Mac the Certificate is often rejected and you may see the below window. Click “Trust this certificate anyway” and hit “OK”.

4. Click “Log In”.

5. Enter your Central Login ID and Password, and hit “Login”.

6. Click “Grant Access”.

7. Click “Connect” to accept the defaults and move to the next step. These options are for advanced users and can be changed later if necessary.

Sync Everything: Select this to automatically download all files available in the cloud to your local machine.
Ask For Confirmation before synchronizing folders larger than # MB: Check this option to require your confirmation before downloading large files to your machine.
Ask For confirmation before synchronizing external storages: This option is ignored for SoCS NextCloud.
Choose what to sync: Select only the files and folders you want downloaded to your computer.
Local Folder: Change the place your files are saved on your computer.

8. Nextcloud is now connected. The folder will appear in Finder. You can also access the files through the Terminal at the “Local Folder” location specified in Step 7. By default this is /Users/<Username>/Nextcloud.
